The Murchison meteorite contains over 100 extraterrestrial amino acids and the nucleotide bases uracil and xanthine--the building blocks of proteins, DNA and RNA.

The Murchison meteorite is named after Murchison, Victoria, in Australia. It is one of the most studied meteorites due to its large mass (>100 kg), the fact that it was an observed fall, and it belongs to a group of meteorites rich in organic compounds.

CM chondrites, together with the CI group, are rich in carbon and are among the most chemically primitive meteorites in our collections. Like other CM chondrites, Murchison contains abundant CAIs. Over 100 amino acids (some of the basic components of life) have been identified in the meteorite.

13 hours warning to meteor impact

STUNNED astronomers watched a car-sized asteroid explode into a brilliant meteor shower as it crashed into Earth's atmosphere.

They then went to a Sudanese desert to pick up the pieces of the asteroid, for which they had only 13 hours warning of impact.

It was the first time that scientists recovered fragments from an asteroid detected in space, according to a study published in the British journal Nature on Wednesday.

“Any number of meteorites have been observed as fireballs and smoking meteor trails as they come through the atmosphere,” said co-author Douglas Rumble, a researcher at the Carnegie Institution.

“But to actually see this object before it gets to the Earth's atmosphere and then follow it in - that's the unique thing.”

2008 TC3 falls into a category of very rare meteorites - accounting for less than one per cent of objects that hit Earth - called ureilites, all of which may have come from the same parent body, Rumble said.

China is counting down toward Friday's launch of its most challenging space mission yet, which is set to include the country's first space walk.

The mission furthers an ambitious space program that plans to build a base on the moon—in cooperation with NASA or not.

"We intend to send astronauts to the moon and ultimately to build a lunar outpost," said Zhang Qingwei, who was until recently a leader of China's manned space program.

Zhang now heads a new corporation that aims to become the Chinese equivalent of the U.S. and French companies, respectively, Boeing and Airbus.

Zhang said China would be willing to participate in the international lunar outpost designed by NASA. Astronauts are scheduled to begin building that settlement in 2020.

Alternatively, China could assemble its own moon base, he said.

computer games didn't have graphics. Or at least they couldn't have graphics
and sound at the same time. They certainly couldn't have graphics, sound
and enough content to keep even a human being amused for more than a few
minutes. So they had text. This was radical - a computer game you could
control by typing in commands. The game would then respond to your commands
with a breathtakingly prescient understanding of your intent. Or not.
Usually not - the early text parsers (circa 1977) weren't that bright.
But, as long as you limited yourself to what the game understood and the
game designers wrote creatively enough to misunderstand you in a humorous
and entertaining fashion, it all worked

So it proved - the Hitchhiker's Guide adventure
game was one of the best-selling games of its era, selling some 350,000

This quality BBC production runs about six hours which shows the difficulty they faced in cutting the movie version down to size. Accordingly, the radio version is more true to the book then the movie so fans will hear all thier favorite lines and scenes. The British cast is a hoot.

Webb was the editor at Britain's Pan Books who bought the book rights to Adams's Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy in 1978, back when it was a hit radio show on the BBC. While Webb didn't have much to do with Adams professionally after that, the two remained friendly until Adams's death, at age 49, in 2001, and that closeness pervades this authorized biography and its conversational tone. That doesn't mean the story is sugarcoated; Adams is occasionally chided for his emotional thickness, and Webb deals frankly with the consequences of his chronic slowness as a writer (one Hitchhiker novel was produced only when his editor, Sonny Mehta, booked a hotel room and sat with him as he turned out the pages). Another section addresses the thorny issue of who contributed what to the zany plot line of the radio series and how Adams's collaborator, John Lloyd, was nudged out of the book deal. For the most part, however, Webb genially celebrates Adams's comic talent and zest for life, aiming his account squarely at the large Hitchhiker fan base with occasional overtures to readers who don't necessarily know every nuance of the trilogy. Longtime Douglas Adams devotee Simpson has penned his second book on the subject (he also wrote The Pocket Essential Hitchhikers Guide, released in the U.K. in 2001). An engaging yet straightforward portrait of the phenomenally successful writer of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (and its series of spinoff books and radio plays), the book is informed by interviews with many of Adams's close friends and associates (Adams died in 2001 at age 49). Simpson weaves a tale that meanders from Adams's school days and university nights to his work as a scriptwriter for the BBC, through his years as a frustrated novelist and, later, to what Gaiman, in his foreword, calls his career as "a Futurologist, or an Explainer, or something." In 1984 Infocom worked with Douglas Adams to create a text adventure game based on the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy books. The game was text only with no graphics but full of character and humour as players explored the game and solved puzzles. Adam's wit and writing style translated well to this format and the game became a bestseller of the era. I remember playing this classic for hours on my Apple //e.
