Meteorite Contains Building Blocks of Life

The Murchison meteorite contains over 100 extraterrestrial amino acids and the nucleotide bases uracil and xanthine--the building blocks of proteins, DNA and RNA.
clipped from en.wikipedia.org

The Murchison meteorite is named after Murchison, Victoria, in Australia. It is one of the most studied meteorites due to its large mass (>100 kg), the fact that it was an observed fall, and it belongs to a group of meteorites rich in organic compounds.

CM chondrites, together with the CI group, are rich in carbon and are among the most chemically primitive meteorites in our collections. Like other CM chondrites, Murchison contains abundant CAIs. Over 100 amino acids (some of the basic components of life) have been identified in the meteorite.

Car Size Asteroid Crashes to Earth

It was the first time that scientists recovered fragments from an asteroid detected in space
clipped from www.news.com.au

13 hours warning to meteor impact

STUNNED astronomers watched a car-sized asteroid explode into a brilliant meteor shower as it crashed into Earth's atmosphere.

They then went to a Sudanese desert to pick up the pieces of the asteroid, for which they had only 13 hours warning of impact.
It was the first time that scientists recovered fragments from an asteroid detected in space, according to a study published in the British journal Nature on Wednesday.
“Any number of meteorites have been observed as fireballs and smoking meteor trails as they come through the atmosphere,” said co-author Douglas Rumble, a researcher at the Carnegie Institution.
“But to actually see this object before it gets to the Earth's atmosphere and then follow it in - that's the unique thing.”
2008 TC3 falls into a category of very rare meteorites - accounting for less than one per cent of objects that hit Earth - called ureilites, all of which may have come from the same parent body, Rumble said.

China Heading to Moon - With or Without NASA

Zhang, a long-time advocate for closer space ties with the ESA and NASA, acknowledged there are "many political and social differences still dividing us that would have to be overcome" before wider cooperation with the United States could occur.

China is counting down toward Friday's launch of its most challenging space mission yet, which is set to include the country's first space walk.

The mission furthers an ambitious space program that plans to build a base on the moon—in cooperation with NASA or not.

"We intend to send astronauts to the moon and ultimately to build a lunar outpost," said Zhang Qingwei, who was until recently a leader of China's manned space program.

Zhang now heads a new corporation that aims to become the Chinese equivalent of the U.S. and French companies, respectively, Boeing and Airbus.

Zhang said China would be willing to participate in the international lunar outpost designed by NASA. Astronauts are scheduled to begin building that settlement in 2020.

Alternatively, China could assemble its own moon base, he said.

Zhai Zhigang, 42, a colonel in the People's Liberation Army, will be the first Chinese taikonaut to walk in space.

Hitchhikers Guide Infocom Game 1984

History

There was a time when
computer games didn't have graphics. Or at least they couldn't have graphics
and sound at the same time. They certainly couldn't have graphics, sound
and enough content to keep even a human being amused for more than a few
minutes. So they had text. This was radical - a computer game you could
control by typing in commands. The game would then respond to your commands
with a breathtakingly prescient understanding of your intent. Or not.
Usually not - the early text parsers (circa 1977) weren't that bright.
But, as long as you limited yourself to what the game understood and the
game designers wrote creatively enough to misunderstand you in a humorous
and entertaining fashion, it all worked

So it proved - the Hitchhiker's Guide adventure
game was one of the best-selling games of its era, selling some 350,000
copies. In 1984.

Douglas Adams: The Atheist interview

AMERICAN ATHEISTS: Mr. Adams, you have been described as a “radical Atheist.” Is this accurate?

I don’t accept the currently fashionable assertion that any view is automatically as worthy of respect as any equal and opposite view. My view is that the moon is made of rock. If someone says to me “Well, you haven’t been there, have you? You haven’t seen it for yourself, so my view that it is made of Norwegian Beaver Cheese is equally valid” - then I can’t even be bothered to argue. There is such a thing as the burden of proof, and in the case of god, as in the case of the composition of the moon, this has shifted radically. God used to be the best explanation we’d got, and we’ve now got vastly better ones. God is no longer an explanation of anything, but has instead become something that would itself need an insurmountable amount of explaining. So I don’t think that being convinced that there is no god is as irrational or arrogant a point of view as belief that there is

    Hitchhiker's Guide Quotes

Some good ones found on wikki quote.

    # "Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the western spiral arm of the Galaxy lies a small, unregarded yellow sun. Orbiting this at a distance of roughly ninety-eight million miles is an utterly insignificant little blue-green planet whose ape-descended life forms are so amazingly primitive that they still think digital watches are a pretty neat idea."

    * The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy p1
    * This is the first line of the novel.

    # "Humans are not proud of their ancestors, and rarely invite them round to dinner."
    # "In those days spirits were brave, the stakes were high, men were real men, women were real women and small furry creatures from Alpha Centauri were real small furry creatures from Alpha Centauri."

    * The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy p114

    # "In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move."
    # "There is a theory which states that if ever anybody discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable... There is another theory which states that this has already happened."
    # "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy has a few things to say on the subject of towels.
A towel, it says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. Partly it has great practical value— you can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapours; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a mini raft down the slow heavy river Moth; wet it for use in hand-to-hand combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or to avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (a mindboggingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can't see it, it can't see you—daft as a bush, but very ravenous); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough.
More importantly, a towel has immense psychological value. For some reason, if a strag (strag: non-hitch hiker) discovers that a hitch hiker has his towel with him, he will automatically assume that he is also in possession of a toothbrush, face flannel, soap, tin of biscuits, flask, compass, map, ball of string, gnat spray, wet weather gear, space suit etc., etc. Furthermore, the strag will then happily lend the hitch hiker any of these or a dozen other items that the hitch hiker might accidentally have "lost". What the strag will think is that any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through, and still knows where his towel is is clearly a man to be reckoned with."
    # "Hence, a phrase that has passed into hitchhiking slang, as in, 'Hey you sass that hoopy Ford Prefect? There's one frood who really knows where his towel is.'
(sass: know, be aware of, meet, have sex with; hoopy: really together guy; frood: really amazingly together guy)"
    # "Anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job."
    # "He hoped and prayed that there wasn't an afterlife. Then he realized there was a contradiction involved here and merely hoped that there wasn't an afterlife."
    # "There is a moment in every dawn when light floats, there is the possibility of magic. Creation holds its breath."
    # "The ships hung in the sky in much the same way that bricks don't."

    * The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy p34

    # "...and you will enter the long dark teatime of the soul."
    # "The thing he realized about the windows was this: because they had been converted into openable windows after they had first been designed to be impregnable, they were, in fact, much less secure than if they had been designed as openable windows in the first place."
    # "The last time anybody made a list of the top hundred character attributes of New Yorkers, common sense snuck in at number 79."
    # "A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof was to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools."
    # "He felt that his whole life was some kind of dream and he sometimes wondered whose it was and whether they were enjoying it."

    * The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy p19

    # "The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to get at or repair."

    * Mostly Harmless

    # "It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes."

    * Life, the Universe and Everything, chapter 24

    # "On the planet earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much—the wheel, New York, wars and so on—while all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man—for precisely the same reasons."

    * The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy p156

    # "Curiously enough, the dolphins had long known of the impending destruction of the planet Earth and had made many attempts to alert mankind to the danger; but most of their communications were misinterpreted as amusing attempts to punch footballs or whistle for tidbits, so they eventually gave up and left the Earth by their own means shortly before the Vogons arrived."

    * The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy p156

    # "It is known that there is an infinite number of worlds, simply because there is an infinite amount of space for them to be in. However, not every one of them is inhabited. Therefore, there must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely the product of a deranged imagination."
    # The problem is, or rather one of the problems, for there are many, a sizable number of which are continually clogging up the civil, commercial, and criminal courts in all areas of the Galaxy, and especially, where possible, the more corrupt ones, this. The previous sentence makes sense. That is not the problem. This is: Change. Read it through again and you'll get it.
    # The history of every major galactic civilization has passed through three distinct and recognisable phases: those of survival, inquiry, and sophistication. Otherwise known as the ‘How’, ‘Why’, and ‘Where’ phases. For instance, the first phase is characterised by the question: “How can we eat?” The second by the question: “Why do we eat?” And the third by the question: “Where should we have lunch?” The history of warfare is similarly subdivided though here the phases are retribution, anticipation, and diplomacy. Thus, retribution: “I’m going to kill you because you killed my brother.” Anticipation: “I’m going to kill you because I killed your brother.” And diplomacy: “I’m going to kill my brother and then kill you on the pretext that your brother did it.” Meanwhile, the Earthman Arthur Dent, to whom all this can be of only academic interest, as his only brother was long ago nibbled to death by an okapi, is about to be plunged into a real intergalactic war.

    * Radio series, Fit the Sixth.

    # The designer of the gun had clearly not been instructed to beat around the bush. "Make it evil," he'd been told. "Make it totally clear that this gun has a right end and a wrong end. Make it totally clear to anyone standing at the wrong end that things are going badly for them. If that means sticking all sort of spikes and prongs and blackened bits all over it then so be it. This is not a gun for hanging over the fireplace or sticking in the umbrella stand, it is a gun for going out and making people miserable with."

    * The Restaurant At the End of the Universe pg 262-263

Memorable Quotes from the HHGG Trailers

Vogon Kwaltz: Attention, people of Earth. I regret to inform you that in order to make way for the new hyperspace express route, your planet has been scheduled for demolition. Have a nice day.

Ford Prefect: [to an unbelievably giant lady] I've been stranded on a strange planet for a number of years, I haven't been avoiding you... You look great! You're doing well... You've grown!

Zaphod Beeblebrox: [about Ford Prefect] He shares three of the same mothers as me!

The Book: Trailers also normally employ a deep voice that sounds like a seven-foot-tall man who has been smoking cigarettes since childhood.

Marvin the Paranoid Android: I'm feeling very depressed.

The Book: [about movie trailers] Often this section is preceded by the words, 'In a world'...
    [Earth is destroyed]
    The Book: But sometimes not.

The Book: Vogon poetry is, without a doubt, the third worst poetry in the known galaxy. The second worst poetry is that of the Azgoths of Kria. During a recitation by their poet master Grunthos the Flatulent, entitled Ode to a Small Piece of Green Putty I Found In My Armpit One Midsummer Morning, four of his audience died of internal haemorrhaging and the President of the Mid-Galactic Arts Nobblng Council only survived by gnawing one of his own legs off. The very worst poetry in the galaxy was written by Paula Nancy Millstone Jennings of Greenbridge, Essex, England and was thankfully destroyed when the Earth was.

Ford Prefect: You've got to know where your towel is.

Zaphod Beeblebrox: I'm from another planet. Seriously!
    [laughs]
Zaphod Beeblebrox: You want to see my spaceship?

    Douglas Adams Biographies

These books are on sale for $5.99 at BookCloseouts.com while they last.

Wish You Were Here : The Official Biography of Douglas Adams by Nick Webb

Webb was the editor at Britain's Pan Books who bought the book rights to Adams's Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy in 1978, back when it was a hit radio show on the BBC. While Webb didn't have much to do with Adams professionally after that, the two remained friendly until Adams's death, at age 49, in 2001, and that closeness pervades this authorized biography and its conversational tone. That doesn't mean the story is sugarcoated; Adams is occasionally chided for his emotional thickness, and Webb deals frankly with the consequences of his chronic slowness as a writer (one Hitchhiker novel was produced only when his editor, Sonny Mehta, booked a hotel room and sat with him as he turned out the pages). Another section addresses the thorny issue of who contributed what to the zany plot line of the radio series and how Adams's collaborator, John Lloyd, was nudged out of the book deal. For the most part, however, Webb genially celebrates Adams's comic talent and zest for life, aiming his account squarely at the large Hitchhiker fan base with occasional overtures to readers who don't necessarily know every nuance of the trilogy. It might be overstating matters to suggest that "before Douglas nobody had been cosmically funny," but Webb's tribute makes it easy to see why those who knew Adams admired him so greatly. (Publishers Weekly Review)

    Hitchhiker
    by M.J. Simpson
Longtime Douglas Adams devotee Simpson has penned his second book on the subject (he also wrote The Pocket Essential Hitchhikers Guide, released in the U.K. in 2001). An engaging yet straightforward portrait of the phenomenally successful writer of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (and its series of spinoff books and radio plays), the book is informed by interviews with many of Adams's close friends and associates (Adams died in 2001 at age 49). Simpson weaves a tale that meanders from Adams's school days and university nights to his work as a scriptwriter for the BBC, through his years as a frustrated novelist and, later, to what Gaiman, in his foreword, calls his career as "a Futurologist, or an Explainer, or something." Simpson, a cofounder of the British sci-fi magazine SFX, does an able job of pulling out revelatory bits, sketching a portrait of Adams as a genius procrastinator, an inventive guardian of his creative efforts and a restless experimenter, always easily distracted from completing a current project by the promise of projects not yet explored. Among the book's more compelling aspects is Simpson's discovery of a large volume of unexplained exaggerations in Adams's recollection of the events in his life, evidence of both the unreliability ohttp://www.blogger.com/img/gl.link.giff memory and Adams's inability to refrain from spinning good yarns, even when they were about himself. It's both a must-have for serious Adams fans and a neat companion volume to Gaiman's more playful 1987 guide to The Hitchhiker's Guide, Don't Panic. (Publishers Weekly Review)

    Don't Panic:
Douglas Adams & the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
    by Neil Gaiman

"It’s all devastatingly true — except the bits that are lies" — Douglas Adams

Upon publication Don’t Panic established itself as the definitive companion to Adams’s life and work. This new revised edition comes up to date, covering his later work and untimely death in 2001, and including a new introduction by Neil Gaiman.

Acclaimed author Neil Gaiman celebrates the life of Douglas Adams who, in a field in Innsbruck in 1971, had an idea that became The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy — the radio series that started it all, the five book ‘trilogy’, the TV series, almost-film, and everything that followed. Don’t Panic also tells the story of the other projects Douglas worked on, including his posthumous collection The Salmon of Doubt.

    Zaphod Beeblebrox Quotes

"Life is wasted on the living."

“If there’s anything more important than my ego around, I want it caught and shot now.”

"Magrathea's been dead for five million years,' said Zaphod; 'Of course it's safe. Even the ghosts will have settled down and raised families by now."

“I am so amazingly cool you could keep a side of meat in me for a month. I am so hip I have difficulty seeing over my pelvis.”

"That's it,' said Zaphod with the sort of grin that would get most people locked away in a room with soft walls."

“’Hey this is terrific!’ Zaphod said. ‘Someone down there is trying to kill us!’
    ‘Terrific,’ said Arthur.
‘But don’t you see what this means?’
‘Yes. We are going to die.’
    ‘Yes, but apart from that.’
    ‘APART from that?’
‘It means we must be on to something!’
‘How soon can we get off it?’”

In 1984 Infocom worked with Douglas Adams to create a text adventure game based on the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy books. The game was text only with no graphics but full of character and humour as players explored the game and solved puzzles. Adam's wit and writing style translated well to this format and the game became a bestseller of the era. I remember playing this classic for hours on my Apple //e.

Now updated with graphics, play it online here

The Ultimate answer to Life, the Universe and Everything is... 42
